Chapter 67: The Sacred Land of Lightning
Chapter 67: Sanctuary of Electricity
Days pass unnoticed in the mountains; in the blink of an eye, half a month had slipped by. During these days, Lu Yun underwent a daily cycle—discharge, recharge, discharge again. His mood, once tormented and anguished, gradually numbed, and by now, he even found himself strangely immersed, almost delighted.
It wasn't that Lu Yun was a masochist; rather, he truly discovered that every aspect of himself had improved remarkably through this half-month of ordeal. First, his physical constitution had strengthened. His body suffered relentless torment, his insides ceaselessly battered by high-density electrical energy day and night. By some twist of fate, his physical durability underwent significant change. Not only could he run faster and jump higher, but even his mental strength had grown noticeably.
Secondly, the upper limit of his electrical energy storage, which had stagnated for so long, transformed dramatically after this period of refinement. If his previous capacity was akin to a small cup, now he had upgraded to the size of a kettle. The change was not simply quantitative; on a certain level, the increase in his energy storage was even more pronounced than the evolution from Wooloo to Dubwool.
Next came the improvement in his efficiency of absorbing currents, or rather, his speed of energy recovery. Previously, he had been troubled by insufficient energy during battles, unable to unleash multiple combo moves in succession. It wasn't until he acquired the Thunder Stone Necklace—a portable battery—that this problem was alleviated. Now, with his recovery speed greatly enhanced and complemented by the necklace, Lu Yun could undertake prolonged, high-intensity combat.
It was a terrifying ability—like an assassin-mage in a game from his previous life, possessing not only high mobility and explosive power, but also nearly infinite mana. Such a game-breaking template would only appear in hacks if the designers had any sense. Yet now, in the real world, Lu Yun had the embryonic form of this formidable template.
Finally, the quality of the current within him had improved. After being repeatedly cleansed and tempered by the high-density electrical energy saturating the air of the Electric Valley, all the electricity he had stored since his Wooloo days was replaced with this denser, more potent energy.
From appearance alone, the current he released had shifted from a bright lemon yellow to a dazzling crescent yellow tinged with white. In practical combat, this high-quality energy meant a significant boost in the power of his skills; now, any skill he cast carried a bonus roughly equivalent to two-fifths of the effect provided by [Charge] before. Most crucially, the high-quality current stored within him was not a one-time consumable. Even in areas with low ambient energy, Lu Yun could absorb and compress the available electricity, refining it to achieve the same effect as in the Electric Valley.
All these enhancements elevated Lu Yun’s strength to a new level. Although his formal rank remained at Level 26, in terms of actual combat capability—without further evolution—even a methodical Level 30 Lu Yun of the past could not match his current self.
Now, Lu Yun was increasingly certain that Zeraora was indeed helping him, and that the torturous cycle of charging and discharging was a unique form of training. If not for the diminishing returns of recent days, Lu Yun felt he could stay here forever, biding his time until he possessed the power to contend with legendary beasts before venturing out.
He savored the thought with contentment.
“Rora!” Suddenly, a cold growl from Zeraora sounded at his ear.
Lu Yun hurriedly stood, shook his head to banish his fanciful daydreams. The day’s ordeal was about to begin.
His expression soured. Though the pain brought visible improvement, the suffering of the process remained, and even after half a month, he had not grown accustomed to it.
…
…
Pat-pat.
Within the Electric Valley, where the air shimmered pale yellow, two figures walked slowly—one large, one small, one leading, one following.
Zeraora strode ahead, icy blue eyes glinting with contemplation. The progress of the Dubwool trailing behind was unexpectedly swift. Even the Luxray from years past, or the earlier Jolteon, paled in comparison.
With a sidelong glance at Lu Yun—whose steps remained light even in the depths of the valley where electrical energy was at its densest—Zeraora nodded imperceptibly.
“At this level, it should be enough…”
Zeraora was the guardian of the Electric Valley. From birth, it had been carefully nurtured by its father. Fifty years ago, after mastering the ultimate technique exclusive to their species, its father vanished into the canyon, never to reappear.
Zeraora, faithfully adhering to its father’s teachings, guarded the secrets of the Electric Valley and provided a perfect training ground for those electric-type Pokémon possessing great resolve and high potential. Yet the Kela Mountains were perilous. Those who dared roam its expanse were powerful, seasoned Pokémon with their own paths. Thus, in fifty years, including Lu Yun, only three Pokémon had received Zeraora’s guidance.
Eight years ago, following the departure of the last Luxray, the vast canyon was left to Zeraora alone. Yet it did not feel lonely; its innate disposition allowed it to maintain balance and composure through constant training. The thought of leaving the valley to explore the outside world had never crossed its mind. The inviolable oath instilled since birth made it the most loyal guardian of the Electric Valley.
To guard and to teach—this was its fate.
…
…
Lu Yun walked silently. The concentration of electric energy in the air around him was now more than twice what it had been on his first arrival. Yet he breathed calmly, his steps untroubled. This level of electricity no longer affected him.
As the two Pokémon ventured further, Lu Yun’s face took on a puzzled expression. By rights, five minutes ago, upon passing the dark giant rock veined with faint cracks, Zeraora should have halted and summoned the magnetic field to begin the day’s training.
But now…
Lu Yun stared at Zeraora, who continued straight toward the depths of the valley without pause, and an intense premonition surged within him:
“Something momentous is about to happen today!”
