Chapter 37: The Light of Righteousness
Hearing Shen He’s words, Lele’s expression brightened considerably. Waving her hand, she said, “I’m off to get something to eat. I have a livestream tonight, and I can’t go hungry.”
Shen He waved as well, replying, “See you.”
Watching Lele walk out of the alley, Shen He locked his bike and headed upstairs. It was already seven in the evening. After dinner, he had returned to the urban village. Yet even now, he still had no clue how to complete his second daily task.
After all, the description was far too vague—not a single lead to be found. ‘Plunderers’... these days, even biker gangs had vanished for over a decade, so where would a plunderer turn up? What, was he supposed to be lucky enough to run into a home invasion?
Shen He shook his head and went upstairs. It seemed he wouldn’t be able to finish the second daily task this time. He just wondered if a new one would be refreshed tomorrow. If not, that would be quite a loss.
Once upstairs, Shen He began practicing the Eight-Level Stance in the living room. Not only did it slowly increase his personal attributes, but it also advanced his ‘Martial Artist’ progress. Truly, it was killing two birds with one stone.
Tomorrow morning, he planned to return to his hometown. After learning swordsmanship with Li Ding at the elementary school, perhaps he could speed up his ‘Martial Artist’ progress. He’d also see what kind of daily tasks might be triggered back home.
Around eleven o’clock that night, Shen He finally finished his practice and went to wash up. Afterwards, he lay down on his bed. Yet before he could fall asleep, he heard a faint sound at the door—someone seemed to be tampering with his lock.
He sat up at once, silently moved into the living room, and after confirming someone was indeed fiddling with the lock, he stood quietly to the side of the door.
It had been years since he’d encountered a break-in. If not for Zhao Hu and Wang Long being sent away, he might have suspected them. The key point was—he was still home.
A ‘click’ sounded as the lock opened. Someone cautiously pushed the door open and tiptoed inside.
Seeing this, Shen He unconsciously stroked his chin. So it really was a burglar. But the guy hadn’t even checked if anyone was home first? The local thieves’ professionalism was seriously lacking.
He casually pushed the door shut.
Bang!
The door slammed closed with a loud noise. The thief, who had just reached the sofa, jumped in fright, spinning around and shining a flashlight toward the door.
The next moment, Shen He flipped the wall switch, and the whole room flooded with light.
Shen He looked at the thief—a youth of only eighteen or nineteen, with dyed blond hair, his face tense with anxiety.
Ignoring the thief’s fearful gaze, Shen He pulled out his phone and dialed, “Captain Chen, sorry for calling so late, but I’ve caught a petty thief. Should I wait for someone to come pick him up?”
Hearing this, the blond youth pulled a folding knife from his pocket.
Shen He frowned slightly, said a few more words into the phone, then hung up. His gaze sharpened as he addressed the youth, “Kid, do you know the difference between burglary and armed robbery? The consequences are worlds apart.”
The youth’s voice trembled. “I can’t go to jail. Move, or else I’ll…”
Before he could finish, he suddenly saw a figure appear before him.
With a swift, resounding slap, Shen He knocked the youth unconscious, sending him limp onto the sofa.
Bending down, Shen He picked up the folding knife and tossed it onto the table.
[Second daily task complete!]
[+3 free attribute points]
[…]
Staring at the sudden words before him, Shen He was momentarily stunned. He glanced at the unconscious youth, then at the floating text, his expression turning odd.
This kind of person—a plunderer? Someone supposed to loot all supplies and even eliminate the official restoration forces?
Clearly, he should never have expected anything logical from the system’s abstract tasks.
Still, three attribute points were a nice bonus—especially when they came so easily.
In less than fifteen minutes, a knock sounded at the door.
Shen He opened it, surprised. “Captain Chen, you came in person? That’s dedication.”
Chen Zhao’s face darkened. “What do you mean? I’m always dedicated.”
Wu Xiaoxiao popped out from behind him. “Master, this guy’s even worse at talking than I am.”
Without a word, Chen Zhao gave Wu Xiaoxiao a smack on the head. “Quiet!”
Wu Xiaoxiao clutched her head in aggrieved silence.
Chen Zhao glanced at the blond youth sprawled on the sofa. “Ah, youth. They can sleep anywhere.”
“Xiaoxiao, wake him up. I’ll take a quick statement from Mr. Shen.”
Wu Xiaoxiao circled around, checked the youth, and carefully cuffed his hands behind his back before patting his head. “Wake up. Don’t sleep now—you can do that later.”
The youth groggily opened his eyes to see Wu Xiaoxiao, in uniform, squatting in front of him. He immediately tried to escape, but with his hands cuffed, he couldn’t even stand up.
Wu Xiaoxiao flashed a sweet smile. “Don’t bother struggling. These are the new rose gold handcuffs—they’re very sturdy.”
She helped him to his feet.
Meanwhile, Chen Zhao finished taking Shen He’s statement. Glancing at the youth’s red, swollen cheek, he couldn’t help but grimace. That must hurt.
The youth looked up imploringly. “Officer, before you take me away, could someone please bring my little brother something to eat? He doesn’t have anything for tomorrow.”
The room fell silent.
Chen Zhao nodded. “Tell me the address—I’ll deliver it myself. But you tried to burgle a home, so you’ll have to spend some time inside.”
The youth was silent for a moment, then pleaded, “Then… could you help my brother get into a welfare home? I won’t be able to take care of him anymore, and I’m afraid he’ll die out there.”
Chen Zhao frowned. “Where are your parents?”
The youth shook his head. “They argued and haven’t been back in years. I found this brother—his dad and stepmom don’t care about him, so I let him stay with me.”
Shen He cleared his throat. “Didn’t you teach him any survival skills?”
The youth’s gaze was firm. “I went astray—my life is already ruined—but he can’t follow the same path.”
For a moment, it was as if the light of justice shone upon the earth.
