Chapter 119: Overwhelming Destruction (Part 2)
The ghostly ability was utterly repulsive—called Possession—it allowed spirits to take over living bodies, a fate even descendents like themselves couldn’t escape. The only saving grace was that the ability required a few seconds of casting time and a direct pounce. So, if one was careful not to be overwhelmed by a horde of ghosts, or if protected by a magical shield, one could avoid being possessed.
Moreover, possession wasn’t necessarily fatal. With a strong enough will, one could make a willpower saving throw to forcibly expel the spirit from within. However, what happened during the period of possession was uncertain. If one lacked strength and was trapped amid a swarm of monsters, being possessed for even a dozen seconds could mean death.
“Captain, there are too many undead,” Feng Lingxing said, eyeing the tide of undead approaching from the front and right. He deliberately asked, “Should I cast Meteor Shower again to blast a path through?”
Wang Jing replied, “There are too many undead, and countless ghosts among them. It’s impossible to guard against all.” The unspoken message was clear: you probably can’t hold them off.
Chu Cheng glanced at them and shook his head. “These aren’t much; I can hold them.”
They weren’t trying to make things difficult for him, only testing the limits of his strength.
“You all stay here. Yao Ning and Wang Jing, cover the two ranged attackers.”
With that, Chu Cheng bent slightly, lightning crackling around his body. With a swift whoosh, he soared into the air and plunged into the mass of undead.
A thunderous explosion shattered all undead within a six-meter radius into dust.
Raising his twin swords, their blades gleamed with a brilliant white light. After a brief moment of charging, he unleashed a fierce slash—a searing white fan-shaped blade sweeping through the undead, cleaving every one of them in two.
Then he activated Phase Walk, entering a phased state. His form seemed ethereal, as if blurred, allowing him to pass through the oncoming skeletons and dive deep into the undead tide.
The phase state existed somewhere between the physical realm and the ethereal plane—he appeared invisible to the mortal eye but still existed, could be attacked, and could attack in return.
He dashed through the heart of the undead horde, weaving back and forth, luring countless undead toward him. Bone swords and claws rained down upon him, transforming into countless invisible spatial wave blades sweeping outward in all directions.
Before the Phase Walk ended, he returned to his original position, instantly surrounded by a dense mass of undead.
Behind him, Zhou Yufeng watched helplessly as Chu Cheng was swallowed whole by the undead, his figure no longer visible. Swallowing nervously, he said, “Isn’t he being a bit reckless by drawing all those monsters?”
Wang Jing frowned, eyes fixed on the undead tide. “It is somewhat reckless. Even Zhang Chaoshen and Lei Ming wouldn’t dare draw them out like this.”
At that, Feng Lingxing rolled his eyes. “Reckless or not, he’s gathered all the monsters. If you’re just chatting instead of acting, what good is that?”
“Cough cough!” Zhou Yufeng forced a laugh, drawing a magical arrow from his back and nocking it to his bow. A fresh breeze swirled around from all directions, quickly condensing into a thick arrow wrapped in raging winds.
With a sharp whistle, the wind-enshrouded arrow shot through the void and into the undead tide. All undead along its path shattered to dust, the arrow piercing over two hundred meters deep.
Yao Ning, guarding their flank, glanced at the undead and shook his head. “You’d better use Arrow Rain. Though the charged shot has long range, its area isn’t wide enough.”
By then, Feng Lingxing had finished chanting. A ball of raging flames coalesced above his outstretched palm. Simultaneously, his voice came through the team channel: “Chu Cheng, get ready to fall back. I’m casting Firewall.”
“Don’t worry about me. These little monsters can’t break through my defense.”
Raising his brow, Feng Lingxing hurled the ball of fire without further ado. The flames exploded, extending left and right into a fiery wall two meters wide and over fifty meters long, cutting across the undead tide.
The fire roared, burning all skeletons and zombies that touched it. Even ghosts dared not pass above the wall. They circled once before turning to charge at Chu Cheng.
At this moment, Chu Cheng stood in the center of the undead tide like a war god, sweeping left and right with unstoppable force.
Occasionally, a ghost would dive toward him, but the moment it touched his back, it was repelled instantly—unable to even get close.
“Your Hero Template (Immortal) has activated, granting immunity to ghost possession.”
“Your Talent Spatial Refraction Level 2 has activated, absorbing undead toxins.”
“Your Hero Template (Immortal) has activated, granting immunity to ghost possession.”
The Immortal-level Hero Template conferred immunity to soul possession—the possession fell under this category and was directly nullified.
Seeing this, Chu Cheng’s heart steadied, his killing intent rising. His body spun rapidly, whipping up a storm of sword blades. Wherever he went, bone fragments scattered; ghosts caught in the storm were shredded instantly.
With his current attack power, each strike was lethal. Even factoring in defense, his damage per second exceeded a thousand—impossible to withstand.
He slaughtered relentlessly, drawing more undead toward him. Unknown how many layers of undead surrounded him from all sides. Behind him, Feng Lingxing and the others could no longer see his figure, only gauging his presence by the undead’s movements and occasional replies in the team chat.
“This defense is ridiculous!” Feng Lingxing muttered, impressed.
As Chu Cheng drew most of the undead away, only a few stragglers remained for them to easily dispatch. They found themselves suddenly without an opponent, a strange feeling for them.
Feng Lingxing clicked his tongue. “Do you know which faction this Chu Cheng belongs to? His talents are insane.”
“No idea, never asked.”
“He’s something extraordinary. Barring misfortune, he’s bound to become a notable figure in Star Tower.”
While speaking, Feng Lingxing quietly sent Chu Cheng a friend request.
Inside the undead tide, Chu Cheng noticed the sudden flood of four friend requests. Raising an eyebrow, he smiled and accepted them all.
High school was different from middle school. At Star Tower, one stayed for many years and could expand one’s social circle. If relationships were good, one could even form a steady team.
Though Chu Cheng could manage well alone with his Spatial Refraction talent and Time Power, being alone had its drawbacks. Many tasks were difficult to handle solo.
His plan was to assemble a reliable elite squad—not too large, but filled with elites whose professions complemented his own.
The battle continued as before: relying on his formidable strength and talent to reflect damage, he launched a ferocious massacre against the undead tide.
When his stamina waned, he stood still, using Spatial Refraction to reflect attacks.
Once recovered, he resumed his unrivaled assault.
After multiple rounds, he single-handedly annihilated the massive undead tide numbering in the thousands.
Feng Lingxing and the others began to act, then watched the scene unfold as if witnessing a god—from shock to awe, then astonishment, until finally numbness.
“Hey! Stop daydreaming and gather the spoils.”
It was only when Chu Cheng strode up and waved at them that they snapped back to reality.
