Chapter 129: The Demon in the Smoke

Outside the Minsheng Mall, none of the Supernatural Affairs Department members stationed there dared to let their guard down for even a second. The detection team captured the supernatural mental fluctuations over and over again, while the intelligence analysis team pulled all available data on Rule-type anomalies from the Alliance archives, working overtime to analyze them.

Fu Ying, as the supreme commander, did not rest for a moment either, sitting in the command vehicle and reviewing document after document. Fortunately, after Li Taixing returned to the city, he immediately canceled the Supervision Department’s investigation into the Supernatural Affairs Department, which meant there were fewer obstacles to launching operations now.

However, despite the lack of external interference, the Rule-type anomaly within Minsheng Mall was in itself a source of despair. While pondering the anomaly, Fu Ying, being in a high position, naturally linked it back to the previous large-scale supernatural outbreak. She was highly confident that this Rule-type anomaly was the trump card the mastermind was truly using to suppress City No. 3.

"Are they trying to pin down the majority of our armed forces using a Rule-type anomaly?" Fu Ying tapped her pen rhythmically. "This is just a lure. The enemy’s real target cannot be the Supernatural Affairs Department, but rather..."

Li Taixing’s face instantly appeared in Fu Ying’s mind. Thinking from a normal perspective, if the enemy were external, their goal would naturally be City No. 3 itself. However, since it had already been confirmed that there was a traitor within the high command, the target would not stop at the city; it was highly likely a struggle for power. Thus, the ultimate target pointed to by the spearhead was naturally the current Chief Executive, Li Taixing.

Since the alert had not been fully lifted, Yan Yan and Zhi Huan were guarding Li Taixing at all times, so his safety should not be a major issue. Still, for the sake of caution, Fu Ying deliberated for a moment before picking up her communicator and sending orders to Jiu Jun and Zhe Guang to strengthen the protection of Elder Li.

"Whoever is behind this... this time, it must come to an end."

Upon receiving Fu Ying’s order, Jiu Jun and Zhe Guang departed immediately. The two were originally heading to Minsheng Mall, but now that the mission had changed, the disciplined duo naturally had no objections. They turned the vehicle around and headed straight for Elder Li’s residence.

Jiu Jun had mostly recovered from the injuries sustained in his previous mission, and his golden hair looked as shiny as it had in the past. Even so, he remained as arrogant as ever, even with his partner sitting in the passenger seat. Zhe Guang, clearly accustomed to Jiu Jun’s temper, didn't mind at all and remained cheerful.

"Jiu Jun, who do you think the traitor is?" Zhe Guang pouted, a look of confusion on her face.

Jiu Jun didn't even turn his head, replying tersely, "Doesn't matter who it is. Just take them down."

Zhe Guang curled her lip, hummed, and turned to look out the window. Suddenly, blinding light reflected from several windows along the side of the narrow road, as if someone were targeting them with lenses. Zhe Guang frowned, but before she could inform Jiu Jun, the moving armored vehicle shook violently, and all its tires burst simultaneously!

*Screech!*

Jiu Jun slammed on the brakes while wrestling with the steering wheel, managing to bring the crippled vehicle to a halt. Due to the vehicle's immense weight, it skidded forward for some distance even after the wheels had stopped turning.

*Rat-tat-tat!*

A series of gunshots rang out simultaneously from the buildings on both sides of the street! A dense rain of bullets pelted the armor of the vehicle, creating a cacophony of clanging sounds.

"Enemies!" Zhe Guang shrieked, but she immediately launched a counterattack. Her supernatural ability activated instantly, refracting the light outside into high-energy lasers that shot toward the gunmen’s positions.

Before the lasers could reach their destination, a blinding ball of fire erupted on the armored vehicle, causing it to shake violently from the impact!

*Grenade launcher!*

*Boom! Boom!*

Grenade after grenade whistled in. Even the professionally modified armored vehicle showed clear signs of deformation under such high-intensity bombardment. The armor wouldn't hold much longer!

"Follow me!" A cold light flickered in Jiu Jun’s eyes. With a thought, five identical red phantom silhouettes appeared outside the vehicle! These phantoms resembled elite ancient soldiers, clad in armor and wielding sabers. Though not as burly as a warlord, they were imposing figures nearly two meters tall. The five supernatural soldiers stood outside the vehicle door, using their power to intercept all incoming bullets in mid-air!

*Bang!*

Jiu Jun kicked the door open and grabbed Zhe Guang’s hand, pulling her out of the vehicle. The moment they left, the heavily bombarded vehicle reached its breaking point. As a grenade fell beneath it and detonated, the entire vehicle was flipped over by the deafening explosion.

The dark frame was swallowed by blinding flames, followed by a secondary explosion that lit up the sky with a brilliant, gorgeous light!

"Get down!" Jiu Jun barked, shielding Zhe Guang with his own body. He summoned five more black-clad soldiers to guard their other side. In an instant, ten supernatural entities had been summoned to the street! And this... was not even his full strength.

"Artillery, manifest!" With killing intent intensifying in his eyes, Jiu Jun scoffed. Four supernatural cannons—two red and two black—appeared around him. Normal people could not see these, and the projectiles fired by these cannons, which possessed lethality equal to real artillery, were equally invisible to the naked eye.

*Boom! Boom!*

At Jiu Jun's command, the four cannons fired in unison. Invisible shells tore through the air and smashed into the rooms where the gunmen were hidden, shattering glass with brutal force. The shells, condensed from supernatural power, detonated on impact, delivering a lethal blow to the ambushers on a mental level!

In a few short moments, the gunfire and explosions on the street fell silent. However, the scent of blood drifted out from the shattered windows.

"We’ve been fighting for a while, yet there isn't a single civilian on this street. These guys were prepared."

"But we only just received the notification from Captain Fu, didn't we?" Zhe Guang looked stunned, unable to fathom how they could have been ambushed. Unless...

"Our communicators are no longer secure."

Suddenly, a hazy white mist appeared in their field of vision. With the High Tower standing, fog could not enter City No. 3; the mist before them could only be the ability of another supernatural user!

Sure enough, a slacker-looking figure appeared, shimmering within the mist.

"The Legion has come to conquer you!"
